Who is this workshop for

This interactive workshop invites design students or practitioners interested in exploring the possibilities of feminist processes of reflection upon their creative endeavors. Following the conceptual background of this workshop, I recognize the importance of situating this workshop in the Colombian context, inviting local students and design practitioners to the conversation, and welcoming English and Spanish speakers.

Participants must be willing to share the dilemmas and encounters they face during participatory projects, including their thoughts about design and participation.

This is a hands-on workshop, however, there is no need for participants to master any artistic medium. I believe everyone can express their thoughts visually and creatively. There are no rules for making, nor an expected visual canon. We do want to create a collective documentation, so your willingness to engage in the exercises and to use the space of the accordion book to record your thoughts is all what is required.

On the other hand, if you have experience in graphics and craft, feel free to use your favorite materials or media to work with for the workshop.

Activities

  • Share our experiences and get to know each other
  • Participate in exercises of reflection
  • Hold dialogues that help us uncover different meanings of participation
  • Gain inspiration from artists that work in book making and creative layouts
  • Craft a collective accordion book
  • Set up an exhibition of the collective book
  • Network and experiment with ways of mediating conversations

Expected outcomes

  1. Collective accordion book as documentation of the workshop discussions and exercises.
  2. Online publication of the book, as a vehicle for extending the dialogue to the larger conference.
  3. Proposal for a journal publication that brings together different notions of design and participation as a contribution to the PD field, feminist and participatory researchers, and the design field in general.
  4. Given the high level of interaction and sharing in the workshop, participants will be encouraged to share potential ideas for future collaborations.
